Territorial Guardians
Non-extractive training and employment rooted in Anishnabe territory and culture
The Territorial Guardians is an intensive 14 day Land-based education program for Algonquin-Anishnabe to strengthen Land-soverighty by learning traditional practices and strengthening their relationship with the Land.
Merging his military background and his university education in Indigenous Governance, Sakej Ward, a Mi’kmaw from Esgenoopetit, leads this program.
Land navigation, camouflage and cover concealment, security patrol, survival skills and much more is taught in this program!
Following the program, many of the Guardians put their new skills to work through paid work opportunities, providing security on the territory, protecting moose populations and supporting Tinakiwin’s ongoing Land-based data collection. They help to prevent poaching activities and ensure that Anishnabe Land users are protected and carry out responsible hunting practices.
